Do you really know the history of the car you are about to buy? Is it stolen - already on finance - previously written off? How many previous owners has it had? Has the engine been switched? When you buy a second hand car, you are never quite sure whether the seller is telling you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Desperate people will do desperate things. You could end up paying for their dishonesty. And, if they lied to you because they were in dire financial straits, they are unlikely to be able to hand you back your money once the truth comes out.

Maybe they owe thousands on finance and look to sell the car to you to get rid of their debt problems. Well, the finance company will just come and take the car off you unless, of course, you'd like to pay off the finance owed to them! They are the legal owners after all so they have rights. This is why it is called "hire purchase" - the buyer is hiring the car from the finance company (the owners) until they have paid for it. Claiming that you bought the car in good faith will cut no ice with the finance company.

You can run a car data check and make sure that the car is legitimate and is all you hoped it would be. For a relatively small fee, you can check the following -

has it been stolen?
is it still owned by the person from whom it was stolen?
does an insurance company own it?
do the police have an interest in it?

has it ever been scrapped?
has the registration plate ever been changed?
how many former keepers?
what are the correct Chassis/VIN numbers?
what is the correct engine number?
is it the right colour?
has it been imported or exported?
when was it first registered?

Remember that a thief cannot sell a car to anyone because he never gets the right to sell it simply by stealing it. Therefore, he cannot pass on good title to you, or to anyone else who may sell it to you, no matter how long the chain of buyers and sellers and regardless of whether anyone bought the car in good faith. The car always belongs to the person from whom it was stolen, or to their insurance company after settlement. If you buy a car without checking its bona fides first, you could end up with no money, and no car.

Some cars are stolen, the insurance company pays out, and then the car is found. If you are happy to buy an undamaged car then fine, but it's nice to know the history isn't it?

And what if the car was a constructive total loss i.e. significantly damaged but capable of repair at "less than higher class bodyshop rates"? Would you still buy it? Would you think that it must have been bodge-repaired? Without knowing the history, you're never going to be in a position to make that decision.

You can only make a proper assessment when you know the facts and a car data check will help you to be in that position. A simple car data check will allow you to be more reassured about buying a car, or it will tell you to walk away if some adverse information comes to light.
