It has been reported that some car dealers are conning buyers when it comes to trying to sell them gap insurance. They are saying that it is a Financial Services Authority (FSA) rule that they are obliged to tell them all about gap insurance, and then they launch into a long pitch aimed at selling this cover at inflated commission-earning terms for themselves.

The FSA has said that there is no such rule. It seems that the dealers are simply trying to make commission on gap insurance that can possibly be found much cheaper if you shop around (e.g. by following the no-obligation links on this site).

Car buyers may well be off their guard by the time it comes to thinking about gap insurance and may fall for dealers' lies on this type of cover. If they simply say 'OK add it on to my deal' then they could well end up paying over the odds for gap insurance.
