CAR NEWS - Feb 2007 Big Rise In UK New Registrations January 2007 saw a big rise in new car registrations in the UK - a rise of 5.6% compared to January 2006. Celebrations of the higher figure were tempered by the fact that January 2006 was a poor month for car sales after a then fall of 13% year-on-year. Probably in light of rising fuel costs and CO2 emission issues, supermini registrations were up by 18.7% and diesel cars were up by 11.7%. The Ford Focus was the most popular car. Overall, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders declared themselves satisfied with the increases and with an 8.8% rise in fleet car sales. A total of 165,603 new cars were registered in January 2007.
Figures for western Europe reveal a January rise of 0.3% in new car sales, virtually unchanged from 2006 and probably explained by the extra selling day in 2007 during the month. The most popular car brand in Europe is the Volkswagen whilst Vauxhall (Opel) holds second spot thanks to the success of the Corsa which has shown a big rise in sales year-on-year of 84%.
