CAR NEWS - Jan 2007 Malaysian Company Proton Interests General Motors US giant General Motors is expressing an interest in car makers Proton as the Malaysian company is feeling the heat of local and international competition. Proton see a foreign alliance as giving them a boost in the new car market. This follows on the heels of interest from Peugeot in France and Volkswagen from Germany. A partnership could be good for both Proton and the chosen partners. Proton could benefit from development work on new models. The foreign companies could also get access to Proton's new car-making plants where capacity does exist and this would give them a better foothold in the growing Far East market.
The Malaysian government is a big shareholder in Proton and the approaches are currently being assessed. Each company is believed to be offering different types of investment packages which Proton is weighing up to decide what would be best for the car makers.
