SMMT has revealed a pleasantly surprising rise in UK car sales for the month of March 07. Against expectations of 425,000 cars, there were almost 450,000 cars sold. This is a rise of 3.1% on the previous March total.

Dealers are having to work harder for these improvements though, with offers of zero per cent finance and free insurance. Both private and business car sales showed increases.

The Ford Focus is still the UK's most popular car - nearly 25,000 of this model were sold in March. Diesel cars are increasingly popular but 4x4's and gas guzzlers are flagging.

April's figures showed another rise on the previous year by registering a 4.3% increase in sales of new cars.
